Regions Tradition Match Details:
The Regions Tradition will be held May 5th through the 8th and it happens at Shoal Creek Golf in Shoal Creek, Alabama. The purse for this tournament is $2,200,000 and the defending champion is Fred Funk and he will be returning this year to take it again if he can. The most recent tournament before this one was the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, which happened April 22nd through the 24th at the Savannah Harbor Golf Resort. That tournament was worth $2.7 Million and was won by David Eger and Mark McNulty.

The Tradition at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, AR
1989 –After winning the Murata Seniors Reunion near Dallas, Don Bies made it two in a row with a one-stroke victory over World Golf Hall of Fame member Gary Player. Bies had 13 birdies in his last 36 holes at Desert Mountain, but it was Player’s missed birdie putt from 11 feet on the final hole that preserved his fourth career victory on the Senior Tour.
1990 – Jack Nicklaus made his much-ballyhooed debut as a senior, but a rainstorm put a damper on his debut and the four-round tournament was cut to 54 holes. Eventually, the Golden Bear became the seventh player in Champions Tour history to win in his first start. He birdied three of the last five holes to post a four-stroke victory over Gary Player.
1991 – In what he later termed the greatest comeback in his career, Jack Nicklaus rallied from 12 strokes off the lead after 36 holes to shoot 66-67 for a one-stroke victory over Phil Rodgers, Jim Colbert and Jim Dent. Nicklaus’ 6-under third round left him five strokes back starting the final round. However, his 94-foot eagle putt at the fourth hole shaved the deficit to one stroke and he eventually outlasted Rodgers, Colbert and Dent on the back nine. It marked the first time since the 1977-78 Jackie Gleason-Inverrary Classic on the PGA TOUR that Nicklaus successfully defended a title.
1992 – Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino engaged in a shoot-out on the back nine before Trevino prevailed. Trevino birdied Nos. 15 and 17 to carry a one-stroke lead to the last hole. The dramatic head-to-head duel ended on the 18th green when Nicklaus’ birdie putt to tie rimmed the cup.
1993 – The Tradition achieved major status for the first time and, despite a 10-foot eagle putt by Mike Hill on the final green, Tom Shaw made a three-foot birdie putt to edge Hill by one stroke for his first victory in four years.
1994 – World Golf Hall of Fame member Raymond Floyd survived a scare from Dale Douglass but eventually won his first major title on the Champions Tour after prevailing in the first playoff in Tradition history.
1995 – Jack Nicklaus claimed The Tradition for a third time, defeating Isao Aoki on the third playoff hole. At the time, Nicklaus was only the fifth player to win the same Champions Tour event three times.
1996 – Ten holes into the third round, it looked like a runaway for Hale Irwin but two holes later, in an amazing turnaround, Jack Nicklaus tied Irwin for the lead. At the par-5 12th hole, Nicklaus holed an 8-iron shot from 159 yards for a rare double-eagle. The following day, Irwin birdied two of the last three holes for a three-stroke triumph. Nicklaus made Champions Tour history, as the first player to win the same event four times. It was also the 100th victory of his professional career.
1997 – Gil Morgan scrambled seven times to save par in the final round, but his second consecutive 5-under 67 on the weekend allowed him to finish six strokes ahead of Isao Aoki. Morgan’s four-round total of 22-under 266 shattered Tom Shaw’s 72-hole tournament record.
1998 – Gil Morgan took full advantage of Tom Wargo’s troubles late on the front nine on Sunday to capture his second consecutive Tradition title, his 10th career victory on the Champions Tour.
1999 – After three inches of snow on the Cochise Course at Desert Mountain on Friday and another round of snow on Sunday morning, Australian Graham Marsh became the seventh different winner of The Tradition and the first international player to win the event. After the Friday round was canceled, Marsh sho 67 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead over Larry Nelson. When a second storm moved into the Scottsdale area on Sunday morning, the final round was canceled and the tournament was reduced to a 36-hole event. Marsh was declared the winner.
The Countrywide Tradition in Aloha, OR
2000 – Played at Desert Mountain for the first time, Tom Kite wins his first Champions Tour event, outlasting both Larry Nelson and Tom Watson in a playoff. Kite’s victory was his first playoff win since the 1990 Federal Express St. Jude Classic when he defeated John Cook.
2001 – Doug Tewell’s 10-under-par 62 was, at the time, the lowest score ever posted in a major and it lead to a nine-stroke victory over Mike McCullough. Tewell became the second player in Tradition history to win wire-to-wire. His 72-hole score of 23-under 265 set a new tournament record and his nine-stroke triumph was also the largest winning margin since Hale Irwin won the 1997 Senior PGA Championship by 12 shots.
2002 – The tournament moved to Superstition Mountain and Jim Thorpe defeated John Jacobs in a playoff. Thorpe birdied the 18th hole in regulation to force overtime and then rolled in a six-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to best Jacobs who missed a four-footer, just moments after Thorpe had converted.
The JELD-WEN Tradition in Sunriver, OR
2003 – Tom Watson fulfilled a promise to his caddie, Bruce Edwards, by winning the JELD-WEN Tradition, his second consecutive major championship win: Watson’s clutch up-and-down birdie on the final hole gave him multiple majors in a season for the first time since 1982.
2004 – In one of the most exciting finishes in tournament history, Craig Stadler closed with four straight birdies to win by one stroke over Jerry Pate and Allen Doyle. Peter Jacobsen, who shared the 54-hole lead with Vicente Fernandez, was among seven players who finished two strokes back.
2005 – Despite a bogey on the second playoff hole, Loren Roberts came away with his first Champions Tour victory as Dana Quigley’s matching three-and-a-half footer lipped out. Roberts had closed with birdies at the final two holes of regulation to set up the playoff.
2006 – Eduardo Romero holed a two-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Lonnie Nielsen. Romero’s closing-round 7-under-par 65 helped set up the showdown with Nielsen. Both Romero and Nielsen were seeking their first Champions Tour win.
2007 – Mark McNulty, who began the final round tied with David Edwards, holed four long birdie putts on the front nine to turn what appeared to be a Sunday shootout into an easy victory. Despite a double bogey on the final hole, McNulty cruised to a five-stroke triumph. It was the first year for the tournament at The Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort after four years at The Reserve Vineyards & GC.
2008 – Two weeks after finishing second to Eduardo Romero at the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado, Fred Funk redeemed himself in Oregon, claiming his first major championship with a three-stoke win over Mike Goodes.
2009 – Mike Reid’s 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole ended a winless streak of 94 starts and gave him his second Champions Tour title. He bested John Cook in the year’s fourth major championship, giving Reid both of his wins in majors. He also claimed the 2005 Senior PGA Championship.
2010 - Fred Funk's 12-foot birdie putt at No. 16 gave him a one-stroke lead over Michael Allen and the 54-year-old Funk made it hold up for a one stroke victory over Allen and Chien-soon Lu.
The players for this tournament include Jay Haas, Tommy Armour III, Nick Price, Andy Bean and Chip Beck as well as Scott Hoch, Dana Quigley, Ronnie Black and Hale Irwin. Peter Senior will also be competing along with Scott Simpson, Hal Sutton and Lu Allen. Bob Gilder, Larry Nelsen and Curtis Strange will also be playing.
