There are just some kitchen staples you must always have on hand that can assist in meal making, making it tastier and healthier. Check out the list below.
- Canned or Pouched Tuna (low salt)- Tuna contains Omega-3 fats and protein and is a great addition to an omelet, salad or even dip.
- Pasta Sauce- A bland meal can turn into a delicious meal with pasta marinara and cheese. You can add sauce on chicken, dry pasta, bread, etc, top with veges and your in for a healthy but very scrumptious dish.
- Beans (low sodium)- Beans are a great source of fiber and goes great with rice, in salads, soups, dip, omelets, etc. If you don't have a low sodium can on hand just drain and rinse your beans with water which will lower the sodium content.
- Peanut Butter- Peanut Butter is a great source of healthy fats and protein and goes great with many things. PB goes great on sandwiches, spread on apples, bananas, celery and carrots. Let's not forget the awesome smoothies you can make with it.
- Dried Pasta (Whole Grain or Wheat)- You will get the fiber you need from whole grain or wheat pasta and to top it off dried pasta can be included in so many different dishes.
- Olive Oil (Extra-Virgin) and Canola Oils- These oils help lower the risk of certain diseases and are healthier then fats like butter. You can use the extra-virgin olive oil as a dressing on salads, pasta, tomatoes, toasted bread, etc. Use can use the canola oils to fry heart healthy dishes. Both can be used for sauteing.
- Canned Tomatoes- Not only are canned tomatoes rich in lycopene and vitamins A and C but it can be used in a varity of meals.
- Nuts Unsalted or Lightly Salted- Nuts are a great source of good fats, fiber, protein and other healthy fats. It also helps to prevent heart disease. Unsalted nuts go great in salads, cereals, yogurts, desserts, etc. Unsalted or Lightly Salted Nuts also make for a great snack.
- Fruit (Fresh, Canned or Frozen)- Fruits are loaded with antioxidants, fiber, essential nutrients and they are low in calories. Fruits pair well with cereals, on top of pancakes, side of fish and can be eaten alone as a healthy snack.
